Chapter 13

1 Saul7586 reigned4427 one1121 year;8141 and when he had reigned4427 two8147 years8141 over5921 Israel,3478

2 Saul7586 chose977 him three7969 thousand505 men of Israel;4480 3478 whereof two thousand505 were1961 with5973 Saul7586 in Michmash4363 and in mount2022 Bethel,1008 and a thousand505 were1961 with5973 Jonathan3083 in Gibeah1390 of Benjamin:1144 and the rest3499 of the people5971 he sent7971 every man376 to his tent.168

3 And Jonathan3083 smote5221 853 the garrison5333 of the Philistines6430 that834 was in Geba,1387 and the Philistines6430 heard8085 of it. And Saul7586 blew8628 the trumpet7782 throughout all3605 the land,776 saying,559 Let the Hebrews5680 hear.8085

4 And all3605 Israel3478 heard8085 say559 that Saul7586 had smitten5221 853 a garrison5333 of the Philistines,6430 and that Israel3478 also1571 was had in abomination887 with the Philistines.6430 And the people5971 were called together6817 after310 Saul7586 to Gilgal.1537

5 And the Philistines6430 gathered themselves together622 to fight3898 with5973 Israel,3478 thirty7970 thousand505 chariots,7393 and six8337 thousand505 horsemen,6571 and people5971 as the sand2344 which834 is on5921 the sea3220 shore8193 in multitude:7230 and they came up,5927 and pitched2583 in Michmash,4363 eastward6926 from Beth-aven.1007

6 When the men376 of Israel3478 saw7200 that3588 they were in a strait,6887 (for3588 the people5971 were distressed,)5065 then the people5971 did hide themselves2244 in caves,4631 and in thickets,2337 and in rocks,5553 and in high places,6877 and in pits.953

7 And some of the Hebrews5680 went over5674 853 Jordan3383 to the land776 of Gad1410 and Gilead.1568 As for Saul,7586 he was yet5750 in Gilgal,1537 and all3605 the people5971 followed310 him trembling.2729

8 And he tarried3176 seven7651 days,3117 according to the set time4150 that834 Samuel8050 had appointed: but Samuel8050 came935 not3808 to Gilgal;1537 and the people5971 were scattered6327 from4480 5921 him.

9 And Saul7586 said,559 Bring hither5066 a burnt offering5930 to413 me, and peace offerings.8002 And he offered5927 the burnt offering.5930

10 And it came to pass,1961 that as soon as he had made an end3615 of offering5927 the burnt offering,5930 behold,2009 Samuel8050 came;935 and Saul7586 went out3318 to meet7125 him, that he might salute1288 him.

11 And Samuel8050 said,559 What4100 hast thou done?6213 And Saul7586 said,559 Because3588 I saw7200 that3588 the people5971 were scattered5310 from4480 5921 me, and that thou859 camest935 not3808 within the days3117 appointed,4150 and that the Philistines6430 gathered themselves together622 at Michmash;4363

12 Therefore said559 I, The Philistines6430 will come down3381 now6258 upon413 me to Gilgal,1537 and I have not3808 made supplication2470 unto6440 the LORD:3068 I forced myself662 therefore, and offered5927 a burnt offering.5930

13 And Samuel8050 said559 to413 Saul,7586 Thou hast done foolishly:5528 thou hast not3808 kept8104 853 the commandment4687 of the LORD3068 thy God,430 which834 he commanded6680 thee: for3588 now6258 would the LORD3068 have established3559 853 thy kingdom4467 upon413 Israel3478 forever.5704 5769

14 But now6258 thy kingdom4467 shall not3808 continue:6965 the LORD3068 hath sought1245 him a man376 after his own heart,3824 and the LORD3068 hath commanded6680 him to be captain5057 over5921 his people,5971 because3588 thou hast not3808 kept8104 that853 which834 the LORD3068 commanded6680 thee.

15 And Samuel8050 arose,6965 and got him up5927 from4480 Gilgal1537 unto Gibeah1390 of Benjamin.1144 And Saul7586 numbered6485 853 the people5971 that were present4672 with5973 him, about six8337 hundred3967 men.376

16 And Saul,7586 and Jonathan3083 his son,1121 and the people5971 that were present4672 with5973 them, abode3427 in Gibeah1387 of Benjamin:1144 but the Philistines6430 encamped2583 in Michmash.4363

17 And the spoilers7843 came out3318 of the camp4480 4264 of the Philistines6430 in three7969 companies:7218 one259 company7218 turned6437 unto413 the way1870 that leadeth to Ophrah,6084 unto413 the land776 of Shual: 7777

18 And another259 company7218 turned6437 the way1870 to Beth-horon:1032 and another259 company7218 turned6437 to the way1870 of the border1366 that looketh8259 to5921 the valley1516 of Zeboim6650 toward the wilderness.4057

19 Now there was no3808 blacksmith2796 found4672 throughout all3605 the land776 of Israel:3478 for3588 the Philistines6430 said,559 Lest6435 the Hebrews5680 make6213 them swords2719 or176 spears: 2595

20 But all3605 the Israelites3478 went down3381 to the Philistines,6430 to sharpen3913 every man376 853 his share,4282 and his colter,855 and his axe,7134 and his mattock.4281

21 Yet they had1961 a file6477 6310 for the mattocks,4281 and for the colters,855 and for the forks,7969 7053 and for the axes,7134 and to sharpen5324 the goads.1861

22 So it came to pass1961 in the day3117 of battle,4421 that there was neither3808 sword2719 nor spear2595 found4672 in the hand3027 of any3605 of the people5971 that834 were with854 Saul7586 and Jonathan:3083 but with Saul7586 and with Jonathan3083 his son1121 was there found.4672

23 And the garrison4673 of the Philistines6430 went out3318 to413 the passage4569 of Michmash.4363

Chapter 13

1 AND when Saul had reigned one or two years in his kingdom over Israel,

2 He then chose for himself three thousand men of Israel; two thousand were with him in Michmash and in mount Beth-el, and a thousand were with Jonathan his son in Ramtha of Benjamin; and the rest of the people he sent every man to his house.

3 And Jonathan smote the garrison of the Philistines that was in Geba, and the Philistines heard of it. And Saul blew the trumpet throughout all the land, saying, Let the Hebrews and all Israel hear the news

4 That Saul has smitten the garrison of the Philistines and that Israel has prevailed over the Philistines. And the people were called together after Saul to Gilgal.

5 And the Philistines gathered themselves together to fight with Israel, three thousand chariots, and six thousand horsemen, and people as the sand which is on the seashore in multitude; and they came up and encamped in Michmash, east of Beth-el.

6 And when the men of Israel saw them, they were afraid; so they hid themselves in caves and in holes and in rocks and in clefts and in pits.

7 And some of the Hebrews went over the Jordan to the land of Gad and Gilead. But Saul was still in Gilgal, and all the people were with him.

8 And he waited seven days, according to the set time appointed by Samuel; but Samuel did not come to Gilgal; and the people were deserting Saul.

9 And Saul said, Bring here a burnt offering to me, and he offered peace offerings and burnt offerings.

10 And as soon as he had finished making the burnt offering, behold, Samuel came; and Saul went out to meet him, that he might bless him.

11 And Samuel said, What have you done? And Saul said, When I saw that the people were deserting me and that you did not come within the time appointed and that the Philistines gathered themselves together at Michmash;

12 Therefore I said, The Philistines might come down against me at Gilgal, and I have not inquired of the LORD, so I ventured to offer a burnt offering.

13 And Samuel said to Saul, You have done foolishly; for you have not kept the commandment of the LORD your God, which he commanded you; for now would the LORD have established your kingdom over Israel, as he had said, I will establish you for ever.

14 But now your kingdom shall not continue; for the LORD has chosen for himself a man after his own heart, and the LORD has commanded him to be a ruler over his people, because you have not kept all the commandments that the LORD your God gave you.

15 And Samuel arose and went up from Gilgal to Ramtha of Benjamin. And Saul numbered the people that were present with him, about six hundred men.

16 And Saul and Jonathan his son dwelt in Gibeah of Benjamin; but the Philistines encamped in Michmash.

17 And raiders came out of the camp of the Philistines in three companies; one went toward the way of Ophrah to attack the land of Shual;

18 And another went toward the way of Beth-hauran; and another turned toward the way of the border that looks toward the valley of Zebaon and to the wilderness.

19 Now there was no smith found throughout all the land of Israel; for the Philistines said, We do not want the Hebrews to make swords and spears;

20 But all the Israelites went down to the Philistines to sharpen every man his sickle and his ploughshare and his axe and his mattock.

21 And there was a broad file for the sickle and for the ploughshare and for mattocks and for the axe and to sharpen the goads.

22 So in the day of the battle, there was neither sword nor spear found in the hand of any of the people who were with Saul and Jonathan; but Saul and Jonathan his son had them.

23 And the garrison of the Philistines went out to the passage of Michmash.
